What Sense In Tariff Cuts?

SIR - With so many small and medium firms just holding on today, and workers everywhere fearing unemployment, what sense is there in cutting tariffs that are vital to keeping all these going - and, incidentally, paying taxes into central revenue to augment the tariff-taxes already collected by the Government?

Lowering tariffs can only mean more factory closures like Lithgow's Berlei and more workers on the dole, with none paying any tax into central revenue.

Surely this must be obvious to anyone with a brain in their head or an atom of commonsense.
